FORT MYERS, Fla. (Aug. 14, 2013) – John G. Raheb, D.O., FACS, has joined Dr. Moses K. Shieh at the Surgical Healing Arts Center, in Fort Myers. Dr. Raheb is skilled in several major weight loss and general surgical procedures.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, he received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in zoology from Rutgers University, in Newark, New Jersey. In 1991, he earned his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In 1992, he completed a transitional internship at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Chester, Pennsylvania and was then commissioned into the Navy. In 1993, he completed training at the Naval Aviation Medical Institute, and then served as a Naval Flight Surgeon until 1996.
He continued his training at Naval Medical Center, in San Diego where he completed a basic surgery internship in 1997. In 2001, he completed a general surgery residency at the Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He served as a general surgeon at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Sigonella, Italy before returning to Naval Hospital Pensacola in 2003. Prior to assuming the role of Director of Surgical Services, he served as Head of the Department of General Surgery.
In 2010, Dr. Raheb completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Eastern Virginia Medical School. He subsequently served as a senior clinician with the Division of Bariatric Surgery within the Department of General Surgery at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. An assistant professor of surgery for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, he was an integral part of NMCP’s surgical residency program.
Operational experience includes deployments to Japan and aboard the USS Kitty Hawk and USS Harry S. Truman. He has deployed to Iraq with the Marine Logistics Group II, Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon in Al Taqaddum and served as Officer in Charge of a Forward Resuscitative Surgical System in Al Anbar province. He served as Officer in Charge of the Army’s 4509th Forward Surgical Team at Forward Operating Base Lagman, Qalat, Afghanistan.
Licensed in Florida and Virginia, he is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, Virginia Bariatric Society and the American Osteopathic Association.
His areas of surgical expertise include general surgery, gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, REALIZE® gastric band, Lapband® and gastric band fills and adjustments.
